Adorable little rat with watercolor (step-by-step)
In this lesson, I show you how to paint a cute rat. As you may know, the arrival of the 2020 Chinese New Year marks the beginning of the Year of the Rat. That’s why I would like to paint this animal and have chosen for this purpose one of my favorite palette “Vintage Pastel”. Let’s begin!
Masking tape (optional, to secure the watercolor paper)
No. 114 Stone Grey
No. 119 Apple Blossom
No. 117 Charcoal
No. 118 Dark Rose
No. 111 Golden glow
Make a light pencil sketch on watercolor paper. If you like, you can secure the paper to your table or board with masking tape.
Take a round brush (size 4), and wash the area inside your sketch of the rat’s shape with clean water. Then add medium-consistency Stone Grey to the still-wet surface of the paper. Don’t wait for the layer to dry. Jump to step 2.
At the top of the still-wet layer, add the Apple Blossom and Charcoal as shown in the example. Both paints should be of medium consistency. Paint the rat’s nose and cheeks with Apple Blossom. Let the painting dry completely.
Paint inside the rat’s ear a layer with a medium-consistency Apple Blossom tint. Continue working with the same brush and tint color. Paint the rat’s tail. Allow the painting to completely dry.
The final step is to paint the fine details with a small round brush (size 2). Use medium-consistency paint. First, add the slice of cheese with Golden glow color. Then paint the closed eye, mouth, and outline with Charcoal, as shown in the example. And finally, add details with Dark Rose.
Hope this cute rat will bring you luck and success in 2020 🙂
